Lepanto: How the Rosary and Pius V Saved Catholic Europe
A Lecture by Christopher Check
|
"The Turks, swollen by their victories, will wish to take on our fleet, and God -- I have the pious presentiment -- will give us victory. Charles V gave you life. I will give you honor and greatness. Go and seek them out." -- Pope St. Pius V to Don John of Austria

"Christopher Check delivers his lecture on Lepanto with the punch and passion that such a subject demands. The combination of scholarship and the rambunctiousness with which he tells the story of Don John's victory over Christendom's ancient foe reminded me of Belloc and Chesterton combined. His lecture is nothing less than a Chesterbellocian feast and is not to be missed." -- Joseph Pearce of Ave Maria University, author of Wisdom and Innocence: A Life of .K. Chesterton

On October 7, 1571, the most important sea battle in history was fought at what is today called the Gulf of Patras, then the Gulf of Lepanto. On one side were the war galleys of the Holy League and on the other, those of the Ottoman Turks, rowed by tens of thousands of Christian galley slaves. Although the battle decided the future of Europe, few Americans know the story, much less how close Western Europe came to suffering an Islamic conquest.
